Rehabilitation
of Schools in Kosovo
AMURT completed the
renovation of the elementary school in PONOSHEC, a village located 25
km NW of Gjakove. The
school was damaged by a missile attack during the recent war.
In addition to the rehabilitation, a new section with
toilets has been added. The renovation was completed on schedule
at the end of October, and a gala inauguration
ceremony marked the opening.
AMURT is
currently rehabilitating two more schools located in Reti and Reti
e Ulet. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is funding these two projects.
Along with the
rehabilitation work, AMURT performed another valuable service for the
Gjakove school district. During the war many of the schools were used by the military and police forces and it was feared that these facilities
were mined. In cooperation with Handicap International AMURT
completed the systematic de-mining of all school buildings in the district.
When
the Kosovar refugees fled to neighboring countries earlier in
1999 our teams provided food, clothing, blankets and other
relief items to 4000 refugees on a regular basis in Albania.
Since
the Kosovars return AMURT Albania has done rehabilitation projects in two hospitals and is working
with a task force of NGOs to bring social services to the
neediest part of Tirana. For more details click
